Long live the Prince

The fact that theDrudge Report revealed Prince Harry's whereabouts in Afghanistan was absolutely disgusting. It's times like these when a good hacker could come in handy. But, getting the Prince yanked from Afghanistan won't diminish Harry's contribution to his nation's battle against extremism. As British writers Charles Moore and Jasper Gerard have put it so eloquently, what Harry has done is to awaken a nation to the sacrifice being made by its soldiers in Afghanistan--that brutal combat theatre that gets dismissed as "the other war." My brother, a sgt. major in the U.S. Army, just returned from Afghanistan last month, after a year of its freezing nights, constant threat of bombs, and the ever-present tragedy of seeing one's brothers-and-sisters-in-arms wounded or killed. Like his forefathers, Prince Harry was there. The thing that a lot of folks might miss in all of this is the enduring loyalty of the British crown to its people. Remember, no one ever asks to be born a prince. It is thrust upon them--they live in that fishbowl all their lives, though they never asked for it. And, in addition to living under the scrutiny that, in a sense, killed his mother, Prince Harry, as third in line to the throne also has to keep a commitment to serve in his country's military. Of course, he could have taken an easy route in fulfilling that commitment, but like some of the brave princes and kings of England before him (and, one mustn't foget--his ancestress Elizabeth I who also took to the battle field, at least for a pep-talk to the soldiers), Harry chose not to take the easy way out. Instead, he chose to put himself in the trenches with the regular blokes of the Household Cavalry. In doing so, he has reminded the Brits and the world--regardless of race or religion--that the crown still takes its honor seriously, that it still considers itself metaphysically tied to the fate of the nation. God save the Queen, and long live the Prince.
