Obama fibs about Republicans and Palin on economy

According to today’s New York Times, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama told an audience in New Philadelphia, Ohio, before Sarah Palin’s speech at the Republican National Convention: “You did not hear a single world about the economy “Not once did they mention the hardships that people are going through.”

Well, he might have said that before Sarah’s speech, but it was already a huge oversight at best and outright lie at worst. Both Gov. Mike Huckabee and Rudolph Giuliani talked about the economy, specifically citing higher prices and lower home values. After their speeches, Palin took the stage and pointed to higher prices for groceries, gas, and heating oil—referring to homes in the northern United States in particular that use oil rather than natural gas for heat—and how these daily costs are undermining the ability of families to take care of themselves.

She also reiterated her support for a bigger, better natural gas pipeline to the lower 48 states to ease America’s dependence on imported natural gas and lower the price of the commodity. And she didn’t stop there. She rolled smoothly into foreign policy, talking specifics in a way that Obama never has, saying specifically and disparagingly that Russia is using its energy pipelines to “intimidate and divide our European allies” who are dependent on Russia for natural gas to heat their homes. The mention showed her to be much more plugged in to developments in the world in the last couple of weeks than the Democratic campaign appears to be. Obama was weak on Russia’s invasion of the Republic of Georgia, and has completely ignored Russia’s arbitrary shutting down of a natural gas pipeline--under the guise of "regular maintenance," an old ploy for Russia--that provides energy to Western Europe for one day last week. Russia’s gesture was widely seen as retaliation to European nations who opposed Vladimir Putin and his doppelganger Medvedev's invasion of Georgia. Palin also said that Iran is using its energy to force policy decisions in the West, and all of these things, she said, should compel us to seek energy independence. She voiced her support for expanding drilling on Alaska’s North Slope, although she did not mention drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, something to which her running mate, GOP presidential nominee John McCain, is opposed.

“They say that drilling for more oil won’t solve all our problems, as if we didn’t know that,” Palin said of her Democrat critics, and went on to catalogue the various types of energy development that the United States must get serious about, including solar, wind-power and nuclear.

With Palin’s pre-school daughter Piper holding the baby of the family, Trig, a boy with Down syndrome born last April, in her arms in the audience, licking her hand and slicking down his sparse hair, Palin pledged her support for families of children with special needs, telling them “you will have an advocate in the White House.”

Finally, a news media outlet that is posting some OBJECTIVE news. I want to throw up with the mainstream media and their "Obama can do no wrong" attitude. Talk about trying to throw an election, the media has made this an up hill battle for McCain/Palin but I think the educated public will will realize the media smokescreen and VOTE FOR THE BEST candidates. On the other hand, the Sheepeople that are interested only in big government and how they can can game the 'system' will vote for Obama.

I agree with T Franks. It is so refreshing to see media who aren't falling into the trap that so many media outlets stumble into, in their brutal trashing of Republicans. I truly hope that America has been able to see the sincerity and "from the heart" speeches that have been giving during the RNC. Some have been spicey, but they are convicted and given with integrity. And way to go, Sarah Palin, for an awesome speech last night. Unfortunately, she had to spend most of her speech dispelling all the nasty rumors that have been going around on the internet. Just this morning, her daughter's pregnancy was brought up multiple times on The Today Show. And who cares if her husband had a DUI 22 years ago. Enough already. I'm proud of Sarah Palin for standing up to the liberal media and showing her tenacity and ability to weather this wicked media storm. :)

So the Republicans all spoke with "integrity"? And it's the "evil liberal media" who are the bad guys, daring to question &/or criticize McCain's choice for VP. Well, I always wonder why those who feel this way appear to have serious short-term memory loss...

It's too bad that we must glean fact from fantasy, and integrity from double–talking hypocrites, with the assistance of Jon Stewart, the fake journalist, who's usually more real than the "real journalists"!

Last night's show cast the bright light of TRUTH on the hypocritical political pandering of top GOP supporters, simply by replaying video of their own words, which oddly shift 180 degrees, depending on whatever serves their political purpose in the moment!

See Karl Rove (along with others) flip-flop like no other, in speaking of qualifications regarding a VP pick, and motivations behind it. Bill O'Reilly, among others, calling the parents of Britney Spears' pregnant sister "Pinheads", assigning them blame for lousy parenting & "who obviously have little control" over their daughter, but Palin is lauded & of course has no role in the very same situation.

And he shows the double-standard at play in the talking point tactic of crying "sexism", simply by playing earlier statements of those making this claim, including SARAH PALIN herself! Of course, they all take a much different position, when the candidate in question has a "D" following her name, calling it "playing the gender card", "retreating behind the apron strings", & "playing the victimization card"...

All I wish for, is a little HONESTY & real integrity, not the "integrity" of skilled political spinning!

Alaska is so cold even the truth freezes on the governor's lips.

i.e. Palin Lies Outright

Palin said in her speech that she told Congress "Thanks but no thanks" on the Bridge to Nowhere.

But she took the $200+ million from Congress slated for the bridge project -- she just didn't build the bridge.

Look it up. It's fact, and Palin used the Bridge to outright DECIEVE the nation about her "opposition to earmark monies".

She is the highest taker of "earmark" monies in the nation.

Alaska takes in 10 dollars to 1 vs. every other state in the nation on Federal "earmarks" and she blatantly MISLED the nation about this.

Look it up. It's fact.

She is a better LIAR than BUSH. Well, almost as good. Give her a couple years and she'll out LIE all her fellow Republicans. She's just getting...warmed up.

The Lib Media (NY Times - DailyKos) give Sarah Palin crap because her husband belonged to the Alaska Indepence Party for 2 years. Obama and Biden skate free for their votes in the U.S. Senate that would provide a path to seccession to Hawaii. Those Craigslist ads are looking better and better compared to advertising in this silly newspaper that fewer and fewer take seriously.

John, I take it by "silly newspaper" you mean the New York Times? When you say "this silly newspaper" it kinda looks like you're referring to the Sunday Paper which I find insulting since I try to call the biased lib reporters on their garbage at every step. The Times isn't all bad, by the way, but their political reporting is overtly biased in favor of the Democrats. -- S. Ramage

Yeah, good thing there are biased conservative reporters like you to cast a harsh light on the biased liberal reporters out there.

Sorry but this is not solving the problem. Youre as guilty as anyone of choosing to focus on only the facts that suit you. Calling out other reporters for being political when you are too is hypocritical.

Paul, in case you haven't noticed, this is my OPINION column blog. It's my job as a political and foreign affairs columnist to write about things subjectively. That's also the job of Huffington, Goldberg, and the other columnists who appear in newspapers and on blogs. Accusing an opinion columnist of leaning one way or another is like accusing a chef of cooking your food. Yes, there are decent limits, and critiquing the reporting of other news organizations for their outside-the-limits bias is acceptable. You may not like the way I'm leaning, but that doesn't change the fact that Obama misspoke. He probably did so out of sheer panic, just as Donna Brazile and Roland Martin suddenly began sputtering as I have never seen them sputter in the aftermath of Palin's speech. They (and Obama) were scared. They've been thinking the the Dems had this election in the bag and suddenly that's clearly not the case. I think Obama is a decent guy, just as is McCain. But when almost every media organization from CNN, to People, Newsweek, US Weekly, The New York Times, the Wash. Post, MSNBC, Slate, and then the whole pantheon of Brit-Lib papers like the Guardian go on nothing less than a medieval witch hunt to discredit Palin, so fevered by their blood lust that they don't even do what most reporters consider due diligence, all the while making sexist comments like Harry Reid's "shrill" gaff, somebody, my friend, needs to say something, and if that somebody is me, so be it. I am a moderate conservative and I am pro-choice, up to a point, but I cannot sit idly by while the stupidly sexist media eviscerate yet another smart woman. They like the Nancy Pelosis with their harmless ineffectual careers, women whose daddies bought them a place at the political table, but they hate women who can actually get something done and wield some real influence.
