Fifty-three years

Today marks the 53rd anniversary of Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger.

Today's also the day that Democratic senatorial hopeful Jim Martin, who faces Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss in a runoff tomorrow, is holding a rally at the state Capitol headlined by U.S. Rep. John Lewis, himself a famous civil rights icon, and Ludacris, a rich and famous rapper/actor. Both are sure to invoke the spirit of President-elect Barack Obama, who is, in case you hadn't heard, our first black elected president-to-be.

I'd say that's progress, wouldn't you?
