Hair treatments get an environmentally friendly spin, while organic cotton sprouts at H&M and African-inspired jewelry arrives in Atlanta

FRUITS OF LABOR

After more than 25 years of doing color, Julian Huxley of Green People Salon endured the pain of losing a friend to lung cancer. It was a wakeup call to him, he says, since “hair colorists are just one step behind coal-mine workers with their lungs.” He set out to try to improve the hair coloring process and treatment. “Hair color traditionally has ammonia, which is so dangerous that it was used in WWI bombs,” says Huxley. Using herbal, all-natural remedies, he makes his own organic shampoos, hair color and treatments. One of these is his luxurious hair smoothie, a medley of earth-friendly ingredients that serve a multitude of purposes. Every client’s hair needs are different, Huxley explains. So for dried-out tresses, Huxley might whip up his deep-moisture regiment: a creamy blend of avocado, honey and organic conditioner. Huxley maintains a paraben-free environment, which means he won’t touch any product that contains methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl—all cancer-causing agents, when absorbed into the skin. The new salon is located inside Blue MedSpa and will expand its walls with a renovation (more sinks, more chairs and more technicians working under Huxley’s guidance) in April. 190 Tenth St. 404-815-8880. julianh@bluemedspa.com.

MAKING CENTS
Last year, we reported H&M was coming to Atlantic Station. Then H&M announced it also was opening in North Point Mall. Both are slated for spring. Now, the hip Swedish clothing store has revealed it’s bringing budget-conscious, fashionable threads to the OTP masses with shops in Mall of Georgia and Town Center at Cobb this fall. Pretty fabulous for those watching their wallets and the environment, considering H&M just increased the amount of organic cotton used in its clothing. www.hm.com.

CROSS-COUNTRY CHARM
Los Angeles–based jewelry designer Devon Page McCleary delivers her diamond-studded creations to Atlanta via Sandee O., a creative studio in Buckhead (3240 Roswell Road). The designer’s pieces are oft seen on Hollywood celebs—perhaps one or two will be inspired to drop in at McCleary’s trunk show March 26 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and March 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The two-day event showcases the designer’s new collection of necklaces, bracelets and rings inspired by her travels to Africa. A percentage of the proceeds from the trunk show benefits the Emurototo Primary School in the Mara, Africa. 404-816-0480. SP
