Chef/owner Gary Mennie shut down his latest venture, Taurus (so named for Mennie's astrological sign), after New Year's Eve's dinner. The chophouse opened to much acclaim in 2005 after Mennie departed from the helm of Canoe, where he reigned over the kitchen for 10 years. No word on what will move into the well-designed space in South Buckhead, but the city views from the balcony are enviable for any brave company looking to venture a new business in these unstable times.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=3518&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
One of our own

Though we have no idea where she found the free time to help launch a comedy troupe, our very own sales executive Emily Dorroh is being featured in Skirt! magazine this month, and we couldn't be prouder. I was thoroughly impressed with the creativity that is Richard Blais; the man continues to shine.

The bar at FLIP. Barry (owner) says the frames are to minimize the fact that there are TVs. He seemed torn about it since he didn't want TVs in there, but he wanted to make the lunch crowd happy. All I was upset about is that John Mayer got in my picture.

These delicious fries and onion rings are fried in duck lard. rB says "the more fat, the better the taste," and I'm inclined to agree, though my waistline isn't as agreeable with my menu choices today.

Po boyger, a clever take on the shrimp po' boy. Ground shrimp is actually quite tasty.

Mmm, the nutella and burnt marshmallow shake. Reminiscent of campfires with a nod to Italy. rB claims he offers the first liquid nitrogen milkshake in the world...

The event is free and open to the public, and takes place on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hammonds House Gallery (503 Peeples Street, SW, Atlanta, GA 30310).
"Pichón" is a compelling autobiography that reveals Moore’s lifelong resistance to the official denial of the racial realities he perceived in Cuba. It’s particularly timely considering that President-elect Obama’s intended initiatives to loosen travel restrictions and consider direct talks with Cuba would be a significant change to U.S. foreign policy.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=3315&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Yes to equality, no on prop 8

I’m a lesbian planning on marrying my partner in the spring of next year. When we wed, we (under current laws) will not be able to obtain a marriage certificate, nor will we qualify for the hundreds of tax benefits granted to straight married couples in this country. If one of us ends up in the ICU section of the hospital where only immediate family is allowed, we might be denied access to be there for our loved one. If a tragedy should occur and major medical decisions must be made for one of us, our marriage will not automatically grant us the right to have our pleas to keep the other one on life support recognized, should our families disagree. We will have to jump through ridiculous hoops to change my last name to hers, and when we have children, our family will have to be closely examined to determine if my wife can adopt the children I bore. Gay adoption isn't even allowed in Cobb County, where we were living, hence our recent move to Fulton.

This is the state of Georgia, where gays and lesbians are treated like second-class citizens and denied the basic right of marriage to the ones we love. It’s been my hope that we will evolve to be like California and grant gays and lesbians the rights to marry.

But with the recent overturning of Proposition 8, the proposed amendment to the California State Constitution that would eliminate same-sex couples’ right to marry, everything seems in jeopardy. On a historic day when America got its first black president and the civil rights movement for African-Americans advanced beyond many people’s wildest dreams, the basic rights for the GLBT community was snatched away from us. It sickens me, and I’m beyond sad.

The decisions made in California directly impact us in Georgia and everywhere else. Atlantans are gathering this weekend to support gay equality with organized events, and I encourage everyone who believes in civil rights to attend.

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community will be joined by friends, families and allies to support gay marriage equality at two events scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008. At 1:30 p.m, a protest will take place at the Georgia State Capitol. A candlelight vigil will follow at 5PM at the corner of 10th St. and Piedmont Ave.

The protest and vigil will be part of the nation-wide efforts coordinated by grassroots-organization Join the Impact. The events will show solidarity in support of LGBTQ equality and in opposition to Proposition 8.

For the LGBTQ community and its supporters, last week’s historic election was undercut by the disheartening reality that 52 percent of Californians voted to take away civil rights for same-sex couples. Currently in the United States, same-sex couples in long-term, committed relationships are denied over 1,000 benefits and protections granted to their married counterparts. For example, they are denied the right to visit a hospitalized partner, the right to Social Security survivor benefits, and the right to unpaid leave from work to take care of an ill spouse.

Vigil organizer Scott Touchstone stated, “It is fundamentally unfair and unconstitutional to deny to some citizens the rights and protections given to others.”

Organizers want both the protest and the vigil to be peaceful shows of support for California’s LGBTQ community and a step in the right direction for ensuring that all Americans are treated fairly.

Join the Impact invites all Atlantans who believe in justice for the LGBTQ community to bring a sign (less than 2”x2”) to the protest at the State Capitol at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 15 and a candle to the vigil at the corner of 10th St. and Piedmont Ave.

For more, visit www.jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/page/Georgia.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=3238&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Win a $1k Gift Card and Early Entry into Select Best Buy Locations on Black Friday

Best Buy is looking for consumers in 25 cities to share how Black Friday shopping is an important holiday tradition for them and their family, and what kinds of rituals they have to make the morning after Thanksgiving an enjoyable kick off to the holiday season.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=3213&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
French connection

There are many theories about the famous red sole of the shoes created by Parisian designer Christian Louboutin. Most say the red soles of the luxury shoes came about after Louboutin grabbed a bottle of red nail polish from an assistant who was doing her nails nearby and painted the soles. But sources close to the designer say he originally got his inspiration at a much younger age, before he even began designing shoes. Find out for yourself this Friday from 1-4 p.m. at Jeffrey in Phipps Plaza where M. Louboutin makes his first visit to the ATL to meet, greet and sign red soles for the shoe-enviable. Recession? Yes. Great Depression No. 2? Maybe, but Jeffrey manager Don Purcell is anticipating a footwear-feeding frenzy, even at price points hovering around $1,000 a pair. Ooh la la!
Nandi makes Georgia Aquarium the only aquarium in the United States to ever house a manta ray and one of only four aquariums in the world to display this species. Nandi will join four whale sharks and thousands of other animals in the world’s largest aquarium exhibit. No shrinking violet, Nandi, who measures more than nine feet across and weighs approximately 456 lbs, flew 9,000 miles on a chartered 747-200 aircraft from Durban, South Africa through Cape Verde, Africa, to Atlanta. The manta ray was under the care and supervision of Georgia Aquarium and uShaka Marine World professional staff and maintained by a highly advanced marine life support system. Nandi was rescued from shark nets off the coast of Durban, South Africa, in April 2007 and rehabilitated by uShaka Marine World, the largest marine park in Africa. She has lived in uShaka for the past year, but we're pleased as punch that Nandi's here in the ATL for us to see her.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=2865&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Something to savor

Food from around here just tastes better. This week, Starbucks launched its newest product: smoothies. Except they're called vivanno nourishing blends. Whatever. They're delicious. The 16-ounce cold orange mango banana blend concoction is a blend of one whole banana, whey protein and fiber powder, your choice of milk, ice and Naked juice (an exclusive blend from the Atlanta company made only for Starbucks). The healthy treat is quite filling and is intended to serve as a meal replacement, but it only contains 250 calories (or less, if you adjust your milk choice to non-fat). Plus, it's got 16 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber and one serving of fruit. The banana chocolate blend, which has 270 calories, 21 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber and 5 grams of fat, is made with bittersweet cocoa, a whole banana, whey protein and fiber powder. Caffeine addicts can add a jolt to their drink with a shot of espresso. One more fresh tidbit: Starbucks uses hormone-free milk! The vivanno blend drinks are $3.75, and are available at all Starbucks. Though you probably have no trouble finding a Starbucks near you, visit www.starbucks.com if you want to learn more.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=2741&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
You can't beat free sushi

We love free stuff, and we're sure you do, too. Sushi Kiku is offering readers to come out and try their fresh sushi for free. Yes, Atlanta Gay Pride is upon us, my friends. If you like it, come celebrate. If you don't, put your angry "gays are spawns of Satan, but I still wear wool and eat pork" Bible-beating signs down and give it a rest already.

Why we celebrate...

What the hell is Atlanta Gay Pride, anyway? It's certainly not just a flamboyant show of feathers and leather. It's far more meaningful. Typically, Atlanta Gay Pride takes place in late June (the third weekend, to be exact) to honor the historic Stonewall Riots, which took place June 28, 1969. The event was a major catalyst for the GLBT community as it helped us develop a very strong and unified front. Standing together, we were going to fight back ... again and again. With organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign lobbying for our rights in Congress and California legalizing gay marriage, progress continues to be made, though we're far from true equality. As we band together during Pride, we're embracing our community for all that it is -- a veritable rainbow of bright personalities from all walks of life, be it attorneys and surgeons, teachers and police officers, military and artists, CEOs and sanitation workers, editors and accountants, restaurateurs and ministers, neighbors and friends. Together, we celebrate our similarities and our differences -- proudly.

What to do this weekend...

Because of the drought, Pride's 3-day celebration has been moved to the 4th of July weekend and from Piedmont Park to the Atlanta Civic Center. There's a plethora of activities this weekend to celebrate Atlanta Gay Pride, not just at the Atlanta Civic Center and the parade, but also at all the gay and lesbian bars around town.

The main Atlanta Pride event is the three-day Atlanta Pride Festival, which takes place this year downtown at the Atlanta Civic Center (<st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">395 Piedmont Ave. NE</st1:address></st1:street>). The festival kicks off at 6 pm on Friday, July 4, and lasts until 11 p.m. The next two days, Saturday and Sunday, the festival continues at the park, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day. Admission is free, and during the festival there's live music and comedy; a Pride Market featuring dozens of vendors, GLBT organizations and crafters; and a variety of forums and ceremonies.

Entertainment at Atlanta Pride is extensive and varied, and typically includes movies, concerts, cabaret and fashion shows. On Saturday, the Festival presents the first of two big parades, the Dyke March, which starts at 6 pm. The Atlanta Pride Parade is held on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.

Jimmy just sent me this message on his Facebook page (yeah, we love Facebook, too):

Just wanted to let you know that, after a 2 year absence from the Atlanta airwaves, I will be returning - albeit temporarily - this next week (7/7-7/11). Catch me every morning from 5-9AM on 92.9 Dave-FM (www.929davefm.com) where I'll be filling in for the morning show with my old 99X friend Yvonne Monet. If you feel like it, I'd love to hear from you while I'm on so feel free to call in. 404-741-0929. The scorecard she mentions is in reference to Adam Murphy's monthly Restaurant Report Card (in our current issue):

Hi Kirsten,

I am a huge proponent of food safety, and I love reading your scorecard each issue. I was at [a major discount chain store] near Perimeter Mall, off Ashford-Dunwoody, and when I saw these English muffins sitting on top of the trash can, I had to take a picture as I was so disgusted. This should deter anyone from eating fast food--no one in their right mind should want to eat food that has been sitting atop a receptacle used for nasty food scraps and who knows what else. This is disgusting and something should be done so I thought of you guys.

Thanks,

Megan

Thanks for being a proactive citizen, Megan! I've forwarded your e-mail on to Adam Murphy, who investigates health inspection violations around Atlanta and surrounding cities. Watch Adam Murphy’s CBS 46 Restaurant Report Card every Thursday at 4 p.m. and Fridays at noon. You can also catch all of his reports in streaming video at www.cbs46.com.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=2669&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Sale away with me

This was the feeling we all shared when Meredith Emerson was kidnapped from the North Georgia mountains on New Year's Day and then subsequently found murdered on January 7. This Wednesday, June 25, Atlantans have an opportunity to honor and remember Meredith Emerson by dining out at any Atlanta and North Georgia Applebee's location anytime during store hours. The restaurant chain will donate 15 percent of diners' total bills to Right to Hike, Inc. However, you must present this invitation to their servers in order for your efforts to count.

Right to Hike, Inc. was founded in memoriam of Meredith with plans to support causes close to Meredith's heart, including hiking safety. June 25 is five days after what would have been Meredith's 25th birthday.

There are 40 Applebee's in metro Atlanta. Find the one closest to you here.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=2628&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Spice it up

Spice Girls belt out, "Spice up your life." Executive chef and owner Jean-Georges Vongerichten of Spice Market (the new restaurant in the W Hotel Midtown) can do just that. I dined there for lunch this past week with SP contributor Hope Philbrick, and I was excited to see it was more than just a market. When Americans hear "market," they think "store." But Vongerichten grew up visiting real street markets around the globe and has translated some of his favorite vendor treats into gourmet fare for you and me.

Lunch guests can be in and out quickly with the "Bento Box," a 20-minute express lunch offered between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for $15, which includes fragrant miso soup, shrimp dumplings and herbs; avocado and radish salad with Chinese mustard and tempura onions; a choice between beef satay, chicken skewers or pork satay; cod with Malaysian chili sauce and Thai basil; a choice of brown or Jasmine rice; and a choice of ice cream or sorbet. But Hope and I weren't trying to make it quick. We wanted to take our time enjoying our first experience of Spice Market, and that we did. We started with three appetizers: black-pepper shrimp served over sundried pineapple squares, chicken skewers with a lime-dipping sauce and Vietnamese spring rolls, which we wrapped in arugula lettuce leaves. The dishes were small and perfect for lunch-size sharing. Hope and I agreed that the shrimp was by far our fave out of the apps, but I was impressed with the meat provided on the chicken skewers.

Next we moved on to cod with Malaysian chili sauce and Thai basil, an entree we shared. The white circle of fish was ensconced in a vivid red halo, which was surrounded by an outer layer of lime green (the basil sauce, I imagine). The dish was mildly spicy, by our standards, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. We paired it with a side of baby corn and broccoli with lemongrass and chili--a completely unexpected twist to veggies and a pleasant surprise. Dessert was a medley of deliciousness: strawberry green tea cake with lychee sorbet, spiced peach tatin with ginger ice cream, Vietnamese coffee ice cream and the Thai jewels and fruits made with crushed coconut ice. The sampling of offerings at Spice was a luxurious way to spend a lunch hour (or two) and get to know the global personality of Jean-Georges.

Spice Market is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Valet parking at the W Hotel costs only $6 when your ticket is validated at the restaurant. www.spicemarketatlanta.com.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=2568&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Do it for the kids

With a terrible heat wave, a hike in gas prices and a looming recession, we could all use some good karma. Why not use that money you’ve been hording for Elvis’ next concert or to put toward Hillary’s campaign (too little, too late) toward something that really will make a difference?

This Friday, June 13, is the March of Dimes 24th annual Dining Out Event with an after-party at Opera Nightclub. The decadent dinner takes place at 7 p.m. at participating restaurants, including Aria, Canoe, JOËL, Trois, Cuerno and Pricci, at a price tag of $1,000 or $1,500 for a table of eight or 10, depending on the restaurant selection. After a super VIP dining experience worth every penny (think of the babies!), head to Opera to burn off some of those calories and indulge in tasty cupcakes by Sweet Pockets bakery.

What’s March of Dimes, you say? It’s a stellar organization that helps improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies and, in 2003, launched a campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth. For more information, visit the March of Dimes Web site at www.marchofdimes.com/georgia.

Tickets for dinner and the after-party are still available. For information on hosting a table or purchasing tickets, visit www.marchofdimes.com/georgia or contact Jennifer Cobb at 404.350.9800 x 208. After-party tickets are included with the table purchase, but individual tickets to the after-party can be purchased for $40 also by contacting Jennifer.
<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=2422&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Easy like Sunday afternoons

SIP The Experience recently added Sunday hours, giving the in-town crowd an inside-outside place to meet, eat, read The Sunday Paper ... and view art. Just about every type of alcoholic beverage is jumping on the bandwagon to align culinary flavors with vino, vodka, beer and now tequila. Rich and delicious on its own, tequila has plenty to offer besides the traditional one tequila, two tequila, floor. You might be surprised what happens on your tongue when you sip on a premium tequila; it’s a lovely smoothness that’ll give any scotch or whiskey a run for its money. Put the college-drinking days behind you, my friends, and enjoy fine tequila served with gourmet fare at two of Atlanta’s restaurants.

Making introductions this Tuesday, March 25, are One Midtown Kitchen and Partida Tequila. Together, the brand and the restaurant present a four-course pairing menu for $75 from 7 to 9 p.m. Highlights from Chef Tom Harvey’s seasonal, high-energy American cuisine include masa griddle cakes with jicama and pomegranate seeds; jerk spiced duck breast; oysters on the half shell, cucumber, tequila-pink peppercorn mignonette; and rosemary-poppy seed pound cake, tequila-honey crème fraiche and lime
sorbet. All this innovative decadence is paired with refreshing tequila cocktails developed by world-class mixologists such as Jacques Bezuidenhout, Dale De Groff and Junior Merino. In the village of Amatitán, the birthplace of tequila, the Partida Estate produces four distinctive tequilas: Blanco (not aged), Reposado (aged six months), Añejo (aged 18 months) and the recently released Extra Añejo Elegante (aged 36 months). Reservations can be made on www.opentable.com. For more information on Partida Tequila, visit www.partidatequila.com. One Midtown Kitchen is located at 59 Dutch Valley Road. For more information, call 404-892-4111 or visit www.onemidtownkitchen.com.

On the same evening, Cabbagetown’s Agave restaurant and Corzo Tequila offer a tequila-paired four-course dinner as well—this one’s $60, plus tax and tip. Menu highlights include sashimi tuna ceviche with chile-rubbed jumbo scallops, tequila and chile seared jumbo Gulf shrimp with creamed baby spinach and white-bean and lobster-basil puree, tequila slow-cooked beer-braised short ribs in ginger lemongrass natural jus and a chocolate-pecan tort with caramel drizzle and honey-infused agave nectar. Corzo cocktails—concocted from the brand’s Blanco, Reposado and Añejo offerings—will accompany each course to maximize the Southwestern flavors served up by executive chef Richard Silvey. As a tradition, Agave follows its special-event dinners with a complimentary raffle for gift certificates for future visits, as well as bottles of whatever is being served that evening. Agave, which is housed in the historic Cotton Mill general store, didn’t sustain any severe damage from the recent tornado, but Boulevard (between Edgewood and Memorial) is blocked off due to the damage at the Fulton Cotton Mill Loft Apartments. To get to Agave, enter at the corner of Memorial and Boulevard into the parking lot of Blessens Tire Company. Complimentary valet service is provided. For more information on Corzo, visit www.corzo.com. To make dinner reservations, call Agave at 404-588-0006. 242 Boulevard SE. www.agaverestaurant.com.

<trackback:ping>http://www.sundaypaper.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=1926&PortalID=0&TabID=138</trackback:ping>
Spring is in the air

So shop it up! Oh, you'll just protect yourself with Airborne, you say? Kevin Rathbun is a force to be reckoned with. This past Sunday, he proved it to the world on national television. Bravo to Atlanta's own chef Kevin Rathbun for becoming the first Georgia chef to defeat an Iron Chef on Sunday’s night Iron Chef America Series. Kevin and his brother, aka “The Rathbun Brothers,” were a hit on the show, creating five different dishes with the secret ingredient of elk: elk carpaccio, seared chili-rubbed tenderloin, elk meatballs, fajita marinated elk loin and Manchego Gougeres stuffed elk liver.

According to the three judges (food author Ted Allen, rapper Bone Crusher and executive chef Alexandrea Guarnaschelli), the Rathbun Brothers' cuisine reigned supreme and scored a 50 to Flay’s 46. Scored in the areas of taste, originality and plating, the Rathbun Brothers received high marks from the judges with one saying, “I’m in awe.”

To celebrate the victory, Kevin Rathbun threw a party at Kevin Rathbun Steak, which benefited the Atlanta Community Food Bank. They raised $11,000 from the sold-out Iron Chef America viewing, where guests got to celebrate and watch the show with Kevin Rathbun.
