President Obama's first act

Now that Barack Obama has made history, the president-elect can look forward to a long line of important issues vying for his attention once he takes the oath of office in January. But I'm hoping he'll elect to yield his considerable influence to affect some change before Inauguration Day in two key areas.

First and foremost, of course, I hope he'll reach out to those voters who did not vote for him, either out of genuine political differences, racial prejudice or brainwashing from the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh, etc. In the less than 12 hours since Sen. Obama gave his first speech as president-elect, I've received a number of distraught e-mails that are frankly disturbing in their level of vitriol. I'll be addressing that issue more directly in my Stop the Presses column in this weekend's issue of The Sunday Paper.

But almost as important, I call upon President-Elect Obama to pull some strings over at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and get "Doonesbury" back in the paper immediately. As you may have heard, cartoonist Garry Trudeau submitted a batch of comic strips in which Obama is named president. (Syndicated daily strips are usually turned in a few weeks in advance.) The AJC opted to pull the strip, placing it on hiatus this week, and resume running it Nov. 10.

Let's give Atlanta's monopoly daily the benefit of the doubt that this move wasn't politically motivated; the AJC endorsed Obama, after all. Even so, it's a baffling move, if not an unexpected one. After all, the AJC already segregates "Doonesbury" (along with the poorly drawn and execrable conservative strip "Prickly City") to another part of the Living section, away from the Comics page, fearing that its readers aren't sophisticated enough to process comic strips that espouse political opinions next to crap like "On A Claire Day." (No matter that "Get Fuzzy," for one, also addresses political matters via Bucky the Cat's right-wing rants. Heck, even "Brewster Rockit" had its title character run for president of the galaxy--why not segregate that one, as well? And "Mutts" pursues a clearly leftist pro-animal agenda. Maybe we should separate the Comics section into "right" and "left"-leaning strips. And don't even get me started on having to find the Business section just to read "Dilbert.")

Since those AJC customers who want to read "Doonesbury" are already forced to take the extra step of seeking it out, one can safely assume that most folks who do read it are sympathetic to its leanings. And posters to "The Vent" notwithstanding, I think even those innocent naifs who stumble upon the strip by mistake are probably smart enough to recognize that it is a work of fiction.

Now that the results are in, and Obama has indeed won (to absolutely no one's surprise), the AJC should run the three strips readers have missed so far. It shouldn't have insulted its readers' intelligence in the first place.

Why we're voting early

1. Red, blue, and green: Let the candidates take advantage of information releasing the names of those who have already voted, resulting in one less flyer clogging your mailbox.

2. Avoid indecent exposure: Revel in the security of the secret ballot and assuage fears of mail fraud without waiting in line with the two-thirds of registered voters who procrastinated. Visit sos.georgia.gov/elections for locations and times, and your democratic duty amounts to five easy minutes, on your terms.

3. Pinching pennies: The price of democracy runs steep: Television ads in Ohio alone cost the presidential hopefuls more than $5.5 million—that’s roughly 1.5 million gallons of gas. Chump change for politicians, maybe, but in this economic downturn, why not help Georgia save some extra spare change? Shorter lines on Election Day reduce the financial strain of running polling stations.

4. It’s just convenient: If you’ve ever overslept, worked late or simply forgot to vote on Election Day, you’ll appreciate the flexibility of being able to cast your ballot without being restricted to one measly day.—Anne Lee Dabney

In the Radar item "A Little Tennis, A Lot of Love" in the Oct. 19 print edition of The Sunday Paper, we state that the Advanta World Team Tennis Smash Hits charity event hosted by Elton John and Billie Jean King at Kennesaw State University on Sunday, Oct. 12 raised more than $40,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Atlanta AIDS Partnership Fund.

That's technically correct, but it should have read that the celebrity tennis tournament raised more than $400,000 for the charities. We regret the error.

Usher Raymond may be happily married and a proud father, but that doesn’t mean the Grammy-winning R&B singer isn’t up for a one-night stand with a few thousand willing fans. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Usher revealed that he’s planning a special ladies-only “One Night Stand” tour that would take place at smaller, intimate venues.

“I feel like I’ve had such a connection with my audience,” the renowned ladies’ man said, presumably referring to his onstage relationship with his fans, as opposed to the ones formed backstage, in limousines and in hotel rooms during his single-guy heyday. In the interview, Usher discussed his sex-symbol status, remarking that “the ladies like to see that masculine build. They question if I still got it.” (Women aren’t the only ones wondering if Usher’s “still got it,” given the relatively modest performance of his latest CD, “Here I Stand.”)

Final details for the tour haven’t yet been disclosed, although we have to believe that the stage set-up will include candles, casual lighting, a heart-shaped bed and perhaps an Al Green CD to set the mood.

Labor Partying

The first Monday in September was originally set aside as a day off for working stiffs. But that one day has long since morphed into the extravaganza we know and love as LABOR DAY WEEKEND. A real stand-up guy

“There is no doubt that the new frontier of entertainment is taking place informally on the street,” former Atlanta resident John Mayer (pictured) posted on his blog a couple of weeks back.

And boy, was he not kidding: After breaking up with his latest flame, Jennifer Aniston (reported by text message, depending on which news outlets you believe), Mayer held an impromptu press conference with a gaggle of paparazzi recently to work out his feelings, although springing for a shrink would have been a lot less embarrassing.

The pop superstar, never one to be extremely forthright in these matters (did he ever really admit that he was dating Jessica Simpson?), gave a rambling and not very informative discourse, alternately bemoaning the breakup and asserting his role as the breaker-upper.

As the visibly unsettled Mayer told the throng: “If you guys are going to run stuff and run every lie under the sun, have somebody stand up for somebody. Have me as a man who ended a relationship stand here and write some truth. Have me stand up for somebody and write that Jennifer Aniston is the smartest, most sophisticated person I think I've ever met. She's one of the most lovely people I've ever met in my life … I ended a relationship to be alone because I don't want to waste somebody's time if something's not right.”

OK, we get it—she’s great, and you dumped her. “Say what you need to say,” indeed …

Whoa! Nelly!

Cornell Hayes Jr.—better known Nelly—had plenty of folks shaking their tailfeathers at the Tabernacle last Tuesday. Although the show—part of the Samsung AT&T Summer Krush concert series—was free, the St. Louis-based rapper didn’t skimp on showmanship, delivering an energetic set that had the whole floor bouncing. Although some of those in attendance might have been reacting just as much to his chiseled physique, complemented by a simple white T-shirt, as to the music. Let’s just say he shouldn’t have any trouble in his upcoming gig as a model for Diddy’s Sean John underwear line.

Trading spaces

Organizers for the third annual Decatur Book Festival—and hormonal home-improvement enthusiasts across Atlanta—were bummed to learn last week that “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” heartthrob and Atlanta native Ty Pennington had to bow out of the Labor Day Weekend book-athon due to a scheduling conflict, said to involve a segment for Oprah Winfrey’s television show.

With big literary names like keynote speaker Billy Collins, Kathy Reich, Eric Jerome Dickey and many more to fall back on, you might be asking, what’s the big deal? “This is an inconvenience because promotional materials such as the festival programs have already been printed, and this may create some confusion for attendees,” said BDF Executive Director Daren Wang in a press release.

Festival folks say they’re working with the publishers of Pennington’s upcoming book “Good Design Can Change Your Life” to score an even bigger replacement. Meanwhile, we’re still grappling with the idea that the hammer-wielding hunk knows how to write. (Just kidding, Ty.)

Pour Some Sugar on Us

Less than two weeks after our cover story on Sugarland (pictured), the Atlanta-based country duo’s third album, “Love on the Inside,” claimed the top spot on the latest Billboard 200 album chart—the band’s first No. 1.

(Another first for an Atlanta act: Christian rock band Third Day enjoyed its highest sales week ever—its new album, “Revelation,” debuted at No. 6 on this week’s chart. That’s right: A Christian rock band from Atlanta scored the sixth highest-selling album in the country.)

The chart, from the Billboard issue dated Aug. 16, reflects the first week of release of the regular edition of “Love on the Inside,” which was released on July 29; a “special edition” with extra songs, released July 22, captured the No. 2 spot the week of its release.

It’s worth noting (at least to us) that the album only went to No. 1 after our July 27 cover story. We’re not claiming all the credit for this exciting milestone, exactly—we’re just sayin’.

But it's not all good news for Sugarland this week: Founding member Kristen Hall has filed suit against remaining members Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles, claiming she's been excluded from her share of profits. The lawsuit says that the three musicians entered into an agreement in 2002 in which they would equally share in all profits and losses, and that since Hall's exit in 2005 the duo has "acted in bad faith." Hall is reportedly seeking $1.5 million in profits, plus interest, attorney's fees and an accounting of all partnership affairs and businesses.

Wordsmiths Books Asks For Your Help

Wordsmiths Books in Decatur, which in its brief existence has molded itself into a cornerstone of Atlanta's literary arts scene, announced a campaign yesterday to raise awareness and funds to keep the store alive through a current rough patch. (The Sunday Paper named Wordsmiths one of the best things about Atlanta in our annual SP100 issue last September.)

On the store's blog, owner Zachary Steele writes: "We need your help to save our bookstore. Beginning today, August 4th, and leading through a weekend fundraising event August 15th-August 17th, I am opening myself to your assistance. It doesn't matter how small your contribution is--with enough help it will all add up in the end. If you want to offer $25, $50, $100, $200, anything at all, it can help."

Steele cites steep rental costs at the bookstore's former location and a massive up-front financial investment for an event with a big-name author that didn't pan out as factors in the store's current financial bind. "Business has been steady, walk-in traffic consistent, sales are up and costs are down" at the new location, he says, although he notes that it's not enough to offset its debt.

The fundraising event begins Friday, Aug. 15 with an appearance by local author Jack Pendarvis, a performance by local band Sealions and a "silent robot auction" of "artisan robots of varying shapes, materials and forms, handcrafted by local businesses, entities, celebrities and individuals."

On Saturday, Aug. 16, the store will host a "pay what you can" performance by Poetry Atlanta, and a performance of local musician/poet Kodac Harrison's "Reach for the Moon."

Skip Caray, R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that I report that veteran Atlanta Braves broadcaster Harry Christopher Caray Jr.--you know him, of course, as Skip Caray--died yesterday. Caray, son of the legendary Chicago Cubs announcer Harray Caray, became the voice of the Braves over 33 seasons.

Caray had been struggling with congestive heart failure, diabetes, reduced kidney and liver functions and an irregular heartbeat. Health issues sidelined him for several weeks at the end of last season, and had relegated him to calling home games only this season. He appeared to have been doing better recently, and his voice, which sounded shaky often this season, was sounding better as well. Fans tuning in to the Braves' most recent homestand no doubt noticed Mark Lemke sitting in for an ailing Caray, although there were no outward signs that Caray wouldn't be back at the mic soon.

Our condolences go out to his family, including sons and fellow broadcasters Chip and Josh Caray. He will be missed.

Barack vs. Luda?

Oh, it’s on. Another hip-hop feud involving an Atlanta rapper has set the Internet aflame —and thankfully, this one has nothing to do with 18-year-old “Crank That” performer Soulja Boy. A spokesman for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign issued a stinging rebuke to A-town heavy hitter Ludacris last week, in response to “Politics (Obama is Here),” a mixtape track by Luda and DJ Drama.

In the song, Ludacris notes that Obama has named him as one of his favorite rappers. Apparently not content with his lot in life as a restaurateur, Grammy-winning rapper and respected actor (“Fred Claus” notwithstanding), Luda throws his hat into the ring for consideration as a running mate, drawling “put me in office/make me your vice president.”

He then leaps into attack-dog mode against President Bush and Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain, with such lines as “Hillary hated on you so that bitch is irrelevant” and “McCain don’t belong in any chair unless he’s paralyzed.” (Our favorite, in response to Jesse Jackson: “If you said it then you meant it/Where you want it, head or gut?”—a clear reference to the immortal 1991 Bruce Willis/Damon Wayans action vehicle “The Last Boy Scout.”)

Obama spokesperson Ben Burton was quoted as saying that “while Ludacris is a talented individual, he should be ashamed of these lyrics.” At the time of this posting, Ludacris had not responded to the statement, and rumors that Sen. McCain was composing his own diss track with Luda’s “Battleground Earth” co-star Tommy Lee were unconfirmed.

But the news wasn’t all bad for Ludacris last week: On July 28 it was announced that Chris Bridges himself is slated for induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame next month, along with Athens jam-rockers Widespread Panic, songwriter Keith Sweat, guitar makers Fred and Dinah Gretsch, deejay Hamp Swain and the late singer and songwriter Dottie Rambo. The Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards will take place Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Georgia World Congress Center. Tickets are $75-$1,000 (for a table of 10). SP Sneak Preview: The Dark Knight

There’s no more highly anticipated movie this summer than Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight,” the sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins.” And the film (screened yesterday for local critics) delivers on that anticipation. It’s a (mostly) fast-paced, intelligent action film; leave out the fact that its main character dresses up in a bat costume, and it’s still an exceptionally executed action thriller. Some quick highlights:

1.
ACTING: Yes, Heath Ledger’s jittery, unhinged portrayal of the Joker (pictured) is every bit as arresting as early reports have indicated. I’ve not always been a huge fan of Ledger’s past work, but his turn raises “The Dark Knight” several levels above just another ordinary superhero movie. With his creaky voice (which reminded me a bit of Peter Lorre), roughly applied makeup and menacing stare, he’s simply magnetic; it’s impossible to notice anything else when he’s onscreen.

But Ledger’s isn’t the only impressive performance. In keeping with the growing trend of casting talented actors in thoughtfully written comic-book films (“Batman Begins,” “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk”), “Dark Knight” boasts a top-caliber cast, none of whom simply cashes a check. Gary Oldman, in particular, shines as Batman’s police ally Jim Gordon, fully inhabiting this slightly schlumpy, dedicated cop; a wrenchingly emotional scene toward the end of the movie shows that Oldman takes his work here seriously.

Aaron Eckhart (as crusading district attorney Harvey Dent) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (taking over for Katie Holmes as Batman/Bruce Wayne’s kinda/sorta love interest, Rachel Dawes) also deliver strong performances; Gyllenhaal, in particular, has a brief but heartbreaking scene that will stay with you long after the film ends. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine execute their supporting roles with aplomb. Even smaller roles are impressively cast. (Oddly enough, star Christian Bale isn’t given all that much to do, comparatively, but he turns in solid work nonetheless.)

2. ACTION: There’s plenty of it, from an opening bank robbery (with William Fichtner as a bad-ass bank manager) to an assault on a Hong Kong office tower that would feel at home in a James Bond film. And there’s a high-speed car chase, of course, the main attraction of which is the introduction of the BatPod, basically an economy-size motorcycle.

3. TONE: Take the “Dark” part of the title seriously. The cinematography boasts a modern urban palate of dark shadows, dim lighting, concrete and steel, especially the streets of Gotham City, which forsake the ornate structures and murky, nightmarish feel of Anton Furst’s designs in the Tim Burton “Batman” movies for a more conventional but still slightly imposing cityscape.

On the story side, there’s a fair amount of violence (but little blood or gore—with one notable exception—to endanger the PG-13 rating), and a few very intense moments not recommended for small children (especially involving Eckhart and Gyllenhaal). The Joker’s twisted manipulations are far more chilling than anything in any of the “Saw” movies. And thematically, the film deals a lot with the idea of what it means to be a hero, in some gloomy ways, but without falling into easy postmodern cynicism.

2. “Stuff White People Like: A Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions” (pictured): From blog to book form, Christian Lander’s painfully spot-on cultural observations (about NPR, Nalgene bottles and Macintosh devices) hit uncomfortably close to home.

3. “Chasing Darkness”: Robert Crais’ latest novel starring wisecracking P.I. Elvis Cole is a typically grabbing, fast-paced thriller filled with indelible characters, complex turns and powerful writing.

4. “When You Are Engulfed in Flames”: David Sedaris tallies up the most bizarre moments of his last 25 years, filled with his trademark wit and biting honesty.

5. “Dear American Airlines”: Jonathan Miles’ hilariously sad account of a stranded passenger who takes a complaint letter much further than it should ever go—but in a good way.

Remembering Charles Dryden

Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Charles Walter "Chuck" Dryden, a member of the famed WWII Tuskegee Airmen, will be eulogized today following his death last week at the age of 87. Funeral services will be held at Cascade United Methodist Church, 3144 Cascade Road in Atlanta. The Rev. Andrew Young, former U.N. ambassador and Atlanta mayor, will deliver the eulogy.

Dryden trained at the Tuskegee Army Flying School in Alabama and was among the second class of black pilots to graduate pilot training in U.S. military history. On June 9, 1943, he made history yet again, leading a flight of six pilots against enemy aircraft over Sicily, the first time black American pilots of the U.S. Army Air Corps had engaged in aerial combat.

Dryden also flew combat missions in Korea and served as a professor of air science at Howard University, among many other distinctions. He also wrote a book about his life, "A-Train: Memoirs of a Tuskegee Airman." Our condolences to his family.

As old-school “Original Gangsta” Ice-T and Atlanta’s Soulja Boy (pictured) have traded barbs online earlier this week, it's been hard to know who to feel worse for: The 17-year-old “Crank That” phenom, clearly out of his league, giggling at his own jabs at Ice-T’s age, or the 50-year-old “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star, lowering himself to a rambling, nearly eight-minute diatribe aimed at a teenager. Of course, it was Ice’s assertion on a recent mix tape that Soulja Boy is killing hip-hop that started the whole thing.

Neither performer has come out of this "feud" looking very good, and neither has Atlanta-born Grammy winner Kanye West, who took Soulja Boy's side in the debate. (Since you've been dying to know, I'm more inclined to take Ice-T's position, as he's clearly an artist who's proven his talent and longevity. Except that "Crank That" doesn't, strictly speaking, strike me as hip-hop: It's just a dissonant, slurred pop novelty, and attacking it as "garbage" inflates the song's pop-cultural status beyond what it deserves.

It’d have been better for everyone involved had the Iceberg taken a cue from NBA superstar LeBron James, who back in March dismissed an insult from Washington Wizard DeShawn Stevenson, saying that to respond would be like Jay-Z acknowledging a diss from … Soulja Boy.

Fred Powers R.I.P.

WGCL reporter Fred Powers has died after a long battle with cancer. Powers was well known in Atlanta for his willingness to place himself in harm's way; I still remember the night I watched him get Tasered, just to show viewers what it's like. It was for these pieces, which he always tackled with good cheer, that he was affectionately known as the human pinata. Although he hadn't been on the air in some time (save for reporting on the tornado that struck the Cotton Mill Lofts back in March), he was always, to me, one of the indelible faces of CBS-46. SP's condolences go out to his family, co-workers and friends. He will be missed.

UPDATE: Powers' memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, at Saint Mark's United Methodist Church, 781 Peachtree Street.

You don’t have to have been a pale, socially awkward teenager in the ’80s to appreciate the pallid glamour of THE CURE, but it certainly helps.
