Salma Hayek may have donned a bit of the caterpillar in preparation for her role as Frida Kahlo, but you need only invoke the famous artist and feminist icon with a cocktail, specifically La Pintura Margarita from Rosa Mexicano. The base of the drink is Patrón Silver tequila and tipplers are encouraged to “pick up a paintbrush,” metaphorically speaking, of course, and experience three layers of flavor: Mexican spice, pear purée and wild berry syrup. The Atlantic Station restaurant is offering the drink July 1 to July 31 to commemorate what would have been Kahlo’s 100th birthday on July 6. The cocktail is $14 and a portion of proceeds benefit the National Museum of Women in the Arts. We’ll drink to that. So what about the peyote? Around town
Luckie Food Lounge has opened its doors in the wilds of downtown, just a trout’s throw from the Georgia Aquarium. In fact, the establishment boasts its own fish bowl of sorts, in the form of “2,200 gallons of salt water in three aquariums, including a 28-foot aquarium behind the sushi bar.” Add seven miles of LED lighting, 80 speakers, plasma screens and a stage complete with its own audio, visual and light effects and, well, you have a party. At least, that’s what nightclub impresario Mike Boles (of Compound) is hoping. But is there food to accompany all of the glitz and glam? Indeed. Look for classic American cuisine in addition to sushi.
And for those who don’t cotton to dance floor hijinks or posing provocatively at the bar, staring longingly at a lonely lobster behind glass, visit Charm, the adjacent gourmet shop and “magazine loft.” That’s right. A magazine loft. And as if that weren’t enough, there are also pastries, boxed lunches and sushi-to-go. And although the store doesn’t offer any Italian men named Fabrizio to spirit you away on the back of their Vespa, they do have18 flavors of gelato. For more information, call 404-525-5825 or visitwww.luckiefoodlounge.com.
Have you ever wished you were a foodie road warrior—the sort of iron-stomached adventurer who took to the mean streets to eat your way across the Southeastern culinary map for “research”? Then head over to the Georgia Center for the Book at the Decatur Library on July 9 when author John T. Edge reads from his latest foodie tome, “Southern Belly: The Ultimate Food Lover’s Guide to the South,” a handy compendium of eateries ideal for referencing on your next road trip. And make no mistake, Edge knows of what he writes. As the author of several culinary books, including “Donuts: An American Passion,” Edge is contributing editor at Gourmet, a contributing writer for Oxford American and the food columnist for US Airways magazine. He also writes for the New York Times and is the culinary curator for NPR’s Weekend Edition—not to mention a 2007 James Beard Foundation Journalism Award nominee. Blue-Eyed Daisy Bakeshop founder and pastry artist and food stylist Angie Mosier will provide noshes for the event. The event is free and open to the public.
