For those of you who have mastered mac ’n’ cheese and steak au poivre, you’ll agree that cooking is a necessary life skill. 180˚ kitchen is a program that works with young adults in Atlanta needing a second chance at creating a better future for themselves. Heading up this innovative company, which goes into full effect in March 2008, is Chef Jeff Gray, who is demonstrating his cooking skills at Bloomingdale’s (third floor) at Perimeter Mall on Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. The event is held in conjunction with the Shopping Benefit, Bloomie’s charity shopping day. www.bloomingdales.com.

HALLOWEEN WEEKEND
Brookhaven Pub 71 is throwing a Halloween bash sponsored by the master of scary, Jagermiester, on Oct. 27 beginning at 10 p.m. Score mad prizes with the 2nd Annual Halloween Costume Contest, and enjoy live music by the Villains. Don’t worry; you don’t have to dress up like a leprechaun to enter the contest, though it would be funny to see you in green tights. 404-467-8271. www.pub71.com.

Say aloha to tropical terror. Trader Vic’s throws Hulaween on Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. The Polynesian dining destination’s party features Hawaiian music from Tongo Hiti with Monkey Zuma, a five-piece band, Dames A’ Flame, Atlanta’s burlesque troupe, costume contests, raffle prizes and an exotic way to spend the holiday. Tickets are $5 or free with purchase of dinner. Kid-free on Halloween? So’s SoHo. On Oct. 31, the eclectic restaurant in Vinings Jubilee hosts a special candy-and-costume-free Flight Night in celebration of its 10-year anniversary. Bar manager DJ Doyle selects 1997 vintage wines complemented by Executive Chef Joe Ahn’s choice of appetizers from the original 1997 menu. Dressing up like a keg … again? On Halloween, stop by Tap in Midtown for a stab at the costume contest, and stay for the drink specials. 404-347-2220. www.tapat1180.com.

Freak of the week? You’ll fit right in at Two Urban Licks. On Halloween from 8 p.m. to midnight, Two serves up complimentary holiday appetizers and drink specials, along with a live band and a costume contest with prizes. 404-522-4622. www.twourbanlicks.com.

SO LONG
It’s the end of the world as we know it as Fadó Irish Pub & Restaurant closes its Buckhead doors Oct. 20. A long-time Peachtree resident and Buckhead institution, Fadó isn’t shutting down forever; it’s relocating to the Streets of Buckhead in a newly constructed building one block east of the current location, near the corner of Buckhead Avenue and North Fulton Avenue. The new restaurant and pub will be constructed by the Irish Pub Company of Dublin, Ireland, and will open in January of 2008. The new digs will offer 6,000 square feet on the ground floor. www.fadoirishpub.com.

LET’S DO BRUNCH
Holiday partying leads to late-morning stomach-filling brunches. Just in time, Steinbeck’s Oyster Bar in Decatur launches its new brunch menu, with feel-good items like pumpkin pancakes, andouille-sausage omelets and crab cake Benedict. Steinbeck’s also offers a tasting flight of four different Bloody Marys. Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 404-373-1116. www.steinbecksbar.com.

When she’s not checking out restaurants, interviewing chefs or nodding off after her fifth glass of wine, Food, Life & Style Editor Kirsten Ott dishes culinary and cocktail insights. E-mail her at kirstenott@sundaypaper.com.
