Big Boi's wife's boutique going out of business

Sherlita Patton (wife of Antwan "Big Boi" Patton) and Tracy Valentine's fabulously fashionable P Valentine boutique is closing up shop, despite their celebrity clientele. The store is dropping prices dramatically to rid themselves of inventory. The last open day is Thursday, so scoot over there before all the goods are gone forever.  (Full article and comments)

What to do this weekend

HEY, I KNOW THAT GUY … You probably know KEVIN POLLAK from his roles in more than 50 films including “The Usual Suspects,” “Casino” and, uh, “Dr. Doolittle 2.” But you might not know him as a comedian and impressionist, known for dead-on takes on Christopher Walken and William Shatner. The actor, writer and producer appears Friday and Saturday at the Punchline for a rare engagement. So what do you need, an engraved invitation? 404-252-5233. www.punchline.com.

THREE GOOD THINGS THE GERMANS GAVE US: And no, we’re not talking about Volkswagens. German food, German music and (best of all) German beer—they’re all waiting for you at the fifth annual GERMAN BIERFEST Saturday afternoon at Woodruff Park. A ticket ($30 in advance, $35 at the door) gets you a sampling glass and all the beer (more than 30 German brews) you can drink. Kids and designated drivers get in free (although no one under 21 will be allowed to drink, of course). There’s also fare from popular local restaurants. It all starts at 2 p.m. Vunderbar! 678-244-1528. www.germanbierfest.com.

BREAK OUT THE ZOLOFT: If you’re a fan of live music and have a hard time making decisions, Saturday night is just plain going to be a problem. Do you rock out to the mildly dangerous, derivative ’90s alterna-rock of the reunited STONE TEMPLE PILOTS at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (404-249-6400, www.vzwamp.com)? Do you take things down a couple of notches and mellow out to soft rockers SISTER HAZEL performing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Chastain Park Amphitheatre (404-733-4800, www.classicchastain.org)? Or do you opt for a rare appearance by country music living legend LORETTA LYNN at the Cobb Energy Centre (404-249-6400, www.cobbenergycentre.com)? See? We told you it was going to be rough …

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE … So prescribe yourself a heavy dose of frivolity Sunday at the Punchline’s COMEDY FOR A CURE event. Hosted by child cancer survivor Jay Eichelberger, the festivities include headliner Tom Simmons and at least one other comic, as well as a raffle and live auction of such items as an iPod, a Nintendo Wii, sports tickets and a week at a Florida vacation home. All proceeds benefit CURE Childhood Cancer. For more information, call 404-252-5233 or visit www.punchline.com.

Wordsmiths Books Asks For Your Help

Wordsmiths Books in Decatur, which in its brief existence has molded itself into a cornerstone of Atlanta's literary arts scene, announced a campaign yesterday to raise awareness and funds to keep the store alive through a current rough patch. (The Sunday Paper named Wordsmiths one of the best things about Atlanta in our annual SP100 issue last September.)

On the store's blog, owner Zachary Steele writes: "We need your help to save our bookstore. Beginning today, August 4th, and leading through a weekend fundraising event August 15th-August 17th, I am opening myself to your assistance. It doesn't matter how small your contribution is--with enough help it will all add up in the end. If you want to offer $25, $50, $100, $200, anything at all, it can help."

Steele cites steep rental costs at the bookstore's former location and a massive up-front financial investment for an event with a big-name author that didn't pan out as factors in the store's current financial bind. "Business has been steady, walk-in traffic consistent, sales are up and costs are down" at the new location, he says, although he notes that it's not enough to offset its debt.

The fundraising event begins Friday, Aug. 15 with an appearance by local author Jack Pendarvis, a performance by local band Sealions and a "silent robot auction" of "artisan robots of varying shapes, materials and forms, handcrafted by local businesses, entities, celebrities and individuals."

On Saturday, Aug. 16, the store will host a "pay what you can" performance by Poetry Atlanta, and a performance of local musician/poet Kodac Harrison's "Reach for the Moon."

For more information on the fundraising event as details become known, visit the store's Web site at www.wordsmithsbooks.com. (Full article and comments)

The Georgia Aquarium: an all-day experience

We love the Georgia Aquarium. But if you plan to go there this summer, try to plan for a weekday. This Saturday afternoon, the wait just to buy tickets was at least two hours, and those hours are spent completely unprotected from Earth's blazing yellow sun. And the line for advance ticket holders? About the same.

Out-of-state roadtrippers can't just turn around and book it home when they see the lines, but you can. Take heed! (Full article and comments)

Regis is waiting

Apparently, they're casting for CBS's Million Dollar Password this Friday and Saturday at the Marriott Suites on 14th. If you're selected, you'll be flown to L.A. next week and (presumably) paired with a celebrity or two and put on national television. Sound good?

The audition runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, and you have to be at least 18 to participate. Other than that, we have no idea what the audition will entail. Hopefully there will be an obstacle course. But probably not.

You can see the flyer on MySpace.

If you get chosen, remember this 47-year-old piece of Password wisdom: If someone says, "Push!" the answer might be, "Shove!" But if they say, "Puuuuush?" the answer is almost definitely "Pull."

You can have that one for free. Break a leg. (Full article and comments)

Do you like Filter? What about free concerts?

Thanks to 99x.com, alternative band Filter will be playing a free show tonight at the Tabernacle's Pontiac Garage! Filter is joined by local Atlanta bands Sleep Therapy and The Julia Dream. Doors are at 7:30. Admission is first come, first served, so show up early!

“Filter is one of the many bands who shaped 99X’s alternative sound through the mid and late ’90s with “Hey Man Nice Shot” and “Take a Picture.” This show means a lot to us longtime fans of both the band and 99X.” —Eric (Dutch) Van de Steeg

The show is all ages, and you can get more info on it at 99X.com. (Full article and comments)
