Both Tech and Georgia lost road games Saturday as expected. The Yellow Jackets bowed 80-68 at UConn to fall to 11-11 on the year. The Bulldogs, 11-10 overall and 2-6 in SEC play, dropped their sixth consecutive game by a 77-67 count at Florida.
Five times this year Georgia coach Dennis Felton has had to suspend a player for at least a game due to off-the-court circumstances. He inherited a mess in Athens, as well as NCAA probabtion, in the wake of former coach Jim Harrick. His record now with the Dawgs after Saturday's loss is 69-73 overall and 24-47 in SEC play.
Since playing in the 2004 NCAA title game against UConn, the Jackets are only 62-52 in the last three-plus seasons after Saturday's loss to the Huskies. Thanks in-part to a very tough schedule, the Jackets have a decent RPI (57) and at 4-4 in ACC play, could position themselves for a Bid Dance Invitation with a strong finish.
The point here is there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of excitement surrounding these two programs. The attitude is almost apathtic in Athens, while the buzz has certainly been missing for the most part at the Thrillerdome this year. I think for different reasons, both Felton and Hewitt deserve to be back next year, but there's no doubt that the fans of both programs are growing restless. What do you think?
Readers of the story "The Divorce Party," in this week's edition of The Sunday Paper will notice no doubt, and given the permanent condition of indignation that seems to afflict some of our readers, may become enraged by the fact that I incorrectly attributed the GOP win of West Virginia during the Feb. 5 primaries to Mitt Romney. It was, in fact, Mike Huckabee who won the "Mountain State." More observant--or perhaps unhealthily obsessed--readers will note that I correctly attributed the win of W. Va. to Huckabee in the news story on th Super Tuesday Primary Challenge in the same edition. How did this happen?
